Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin called for tax relief for homeowners ahead of the February 1 due date for property taxes in many cities and towns in the state.

Galvin said relief should be offered to homeowners unable to pay property taxes on time this year.

Galvin also encouraged homeowners to take advantage of existing abatement opportunities ahead of the upcoming abatement application deadline.

February 1st is the deadline for property tax payments in two-thirds of the cities and towns in Massachusetts. It is also the last day to file for an abatement in those communities.

Abatement and property tax exemption forms are available from all municipal assessors’ offices. Exemptions are available for certain elderly homeowners, the blind, disabled veterans, minor children of a deceased parent, or minor children of police or firefighters killed in the line of duty.

Tips for those considering an abatement are contained in a brochure available from Secretary Galvin’s Citizen Information Service. The may be found online at www.sec.state.ma.us/cis or may be obtained by calling 1-800-392-6090.
