CHARLTON – A vehicle that failed to stop for Massachusetts State Police on Rt. 84 exited onto Rt. 20, leading to a vehicle crash and pursuit on foot involving officers from Charlton and Oxford, Massachusetts State Police [MSP] Troopers, K-9 units, the MSP Airwing and a Police drone.
With MSP in pursuit of a vehicle exceeding over 100 miles-per-hour on Rt. 84, Charlton Police took a position on Rt. 20 just before midnight on Thursday, August 3.
The vehicle exited Rt. 84, heading east on Rt. 20.
With its headlights off, the vehicle attempted to use the Juniper Hills Apartments to evade police, but a Charlton Police officer had posted at the entrance. The vehicle turned back onto Rt. 20, headed east.
The fleeing driver again evaded being stopped, this time by MSP, posted at Stafford St., and continue east on Rt. 20.
When the vehicle attempted to pass a tractor trailer in the breakdown lane further along Rt. 20, the vehicle lost control, due to construction in the area, and struck a barrier near Horne Homestead Rd, nearly nine miles from the Rt. 84 exit.
The driver exited the vehicle, jumped over a Jersey barrier on foot, and ran into the nearby woods.
MSP and officers from Charlton and Oxford set up a perimeter to contain the suspect while k-9 units, the State Police Airwing and a Police drone were brought in for support.
MSP apprehended the suspect near Hammond Hill Rd. and Oxbow Rd, around a half mile away from the crash site.
Massachusetts State Police have not released the name of the suspect. This post will be updated with any further information be made available.
