WORCESTER – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced on Monday it had awarded Worcester County communities $2,608,992 to build systems to end youth homelessness. The funding is part of $83.7 million in funding to 17 communities nationwide through HUD’s Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP).

The funding is intended to address youth homelessness through funding for housing units, wrap-around services, and housing support as well as youth-focused performance measurement and coordinated entry systems. Worcester and other funded communities are required to work with local youth advisory boards, child welfare agencies and other community partners to create a comprehensive community plan to end youth homelessness over the next several months.

In the evaluation for funding, grantees were found to have made progress developing youth-informed programs.

The only other New England community selected in this round of THDP funding was Lynn, MA, which was awarded $2,372,347.

Communities selected in California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington account for the remainder of the funding allocated.
