The U.S. Department of Education released results of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) showing the largest decline nationwide in math scores since 1990 and a three point decline in reading scores when compared to when the testing was last issued, in 2019.
Scores among Massachusetts students remained at or near the top of the scores nationwide in all four tests, but declined from 2019 scores.
Fourth grade students in Massachusetts had the highest numeric score of any state, at 277, and a score of 242 in math, just one point below the highest state score.
Eighth grade students in Massachusetts had the second highest reading score, 269, just one point below the leading score, and the highest math score at 284.
The scoring scale of each test ranges from zero to 500.
The reported scores were the result of tests administered to a sample of fourth and eight grade students during the winter of 2022. The tests are normally given every two years, but had not been given since 2019.
