WORCESTER – Messages from healthcare institutions in Massachusetts and across the country recognized National Doctor’s Day today, March 30, and the work doctors do to keep patients healthy and save lives.
The first doctor’s day was declared in 1933 in Winder, Georgia, according to the Southern Medical Association. The date of March 30 was selected to coincide with the date of the first administration of anesthesia by Dr. Crawford W. Long in Jefferson, Georgia, in 1842.
President George H.W. Bush issued the first national proclamation in observation of National Doctor’s Day in 1991.
According to the Federation of State Medical Boards physician survey in 2020, the last currently available, there are 1,018,776 licensed physicians in the United States.

As an Auschwitz prisoner, Dr. Gisella Perl treated fellow inmates for illnesses caused by starvation, infection, and torture at the hands of their captors. After the war, she delivered more than 3,000 babies. On #NationalDoctorsDay, we thank the doctors who save lives every day. pic.twitter.com/SaOOjAvLHJ
