WORCESTER – A new, in-school food pantry will launch at the City View Elementary School on Prospect Street in Worcester on Thursday, which will be accessible by the 430 students from Pre-K to 6th grade.
A full 100% of students at the school are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals there. Around 75,000 area residents turned to Worcester County Food Bank for assistance in 2022. About 32 percent of those were children.
Stop & Shop, UMass Chan Medical School, The Juniper Outreach Foundation and construction management company Consigli collaborated on the project to fight student hunger in Worcester. The Juniper Outreach Foundation will assist the school in running the pantry, with active participation from the school’s student council, which consists of 5th and 6th graders.
Stop & Shop provided a $12,500 donationto the project, while UMass Chan volunteers cleared out the designed space. Consigli painted, donated and installed shelving, storage bins, and provided carpentry work to bring the project together.
UMass Chan and Stop & Shop previously collaborated on the school food pantries at North High School and East Middle School.
