SOUTHBRIDGE – Police in Southbridge arrested Chayson Ortiz, a 26-year-old man reported to be homeless, on Thursday, July 16. The arrest came after a lengthy pursuit that included the suspect attempting to swim away in the Quinebaug River.

At around 2:30 PM officers on routine patrol spotted Ortiz, wanted for breaking and entering that had occurred earlier in the day. When officers approached Ortiz, he fled.

During the standoff, police allege Ortiz threatened to kill officers and brandished sticks and large rocks.

Ortiz attempted to swim upstream to evade capture. A firefighter entered the water to prevent Ortiz from escaping. Police eventually subdued him and placed him under arrest.

Police also report that during the standoff, over 100 people gathered on the scene and became unruly and combative towards officers.

Ortiz is facing charges that include Breaking and Entering in the Nighttime with Intent to Commit a Felony, Resisting Arrest, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault and Battery on a Police Officer, Disorderly Conduct and Disturbing the Peace.

Bail was set at $2,500 pending his arraignment in Dudley District Court.
