WORCESTER – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation [MassDOT] is now accepting proposals for a replacement facility for the Registry of Motor Vehicles [RMV] in Worcester.
The state’s Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance [DCAMM] issued an RFP on behalf of MassDOT. The deadline for submission is Tuesday, March 24. DCAMM and MassDOT will not evaluate any proposals until after the deadline.
As ThisWeekinWorcester.com [TWIW] reported in November, the Worcester RMV is looking to move away from its downtown location on Main St. to somewhere else within the city limits.
MassDOT told TWIW that the state will only consider locations in Worcester. They also said there’s no deadline for the RMV to decide on a location to move to.
As we previously reported, MassDOT said the downtown Worcester customer service center — which was built in the early 1980s — is deteriorated, but is in safe condition.
MassDOT has evaluated the facility and determined that the building would need a significant overhaul in order to continue serving customers. An upgrade of the existing property would cause major disruptions to the RMV’s operations and could even require the facility to close for up to a year to complete renovations.
