Worcester City Council Preview: Bob Cousy Statue, Table Talk TIF, and more

We’ve already covered plenty from this week’s agenda [see below], but there’s still plenty to digest: the City is accepting a $150,000 contribution to a planned Bob Cousy statue, we have some details on the deal between the City and Table Talk Pies, and much more.

Cousy Statue Planned for Outside the DCU Center

The City will vote on resolution to accept a contribution of up to $150,000 for the design, creation and delivery of a statue honoring former Boston Celtics and Holy Cross standout — and Worcester resident — Bob Cousy.

District 5 City Councilor brought the idea for a Cousy statue to council back in July 2019.

The money will come from the $1 million ASM Global/SMG Management Agreement Extension.

Let’s Talk Table Talk TIF Deal with City

As ThisWeekinWorcester.com reported last week, Table Talk Pies plans to

Construction is expected to start in May.

The City is proposing at Tax Increment Financing Deal [TIF] with Table Talk Pies to help keep the company in Worcester and grow in the city. The total value of the location at the SWIP where Table Talk will build will increase from $1.37 million to $10 million, according to the City.

The TIF Plan is for 20 years at an average of 60% on the increment. In other words, Table Talk will save about $4.6 million, but the City will receive about $4.3 million in taxes over the term. It’s a win-win for the City and Table Talk on land that likely otherwise wouldn’t be developed on any time soon.

And ICYMI…

Last week, we covered the new yellow City trash bags being sold now and three items in Monday’s “5 Things,” including Crompton Park Skate Park designs, text message alerts from National Grid and Keep Worcester Clean stats from the second half of 2019.
