City Council Preview: Foley Stadium, Ballpark Commission, School Pick-Up Lines & More

WORCESTER – The City Council meets at  6:30 PM on Tuesday, November 9.

There are several items of interest for Worcester residents on the both the Council agenda and City Manager’s agenda on Tuesday night, including an update on Foley Stadium improvements, the first members of the Worcester Ballpark Commission are announced, redistricting will create new voting wards and precincts and District 3 city councilor George Russell is asking the city to consider constructing more parking at Roosevelt School to handle the long school pick-up lines on Grafton Street.

Update on Foley Stadium Improvements

The Worcester Department of Public Works & Parks have contracted Berkshire Design Group to review and redesign the outer fields at Foley Stadium on Chandler Street.

According to a communication, the DPW says it will likely take two to three months to review accessibility to the outer fields, complete field layouts meeting MIAA requirements, complete a final design for the fields with amenities, have Worcester Public Schools review the design and filing several environmental profiles as necessary.

A final improvement schedule and construction timeline will be presented once all of the above have been completed.

Seven Members of Worcester Ballpark Commission Announced

The first members of the Worcester Ballpark Commission have been appointed by City Manager Ed Augustus. The commission will oversee the ballpark lease agreement and the financial status of the ballpark facilities, as well as handle permits and licenses for city events at the park and more.

The commission members include:

  • David Moore – District 1 (Term expires 1/14/26)
  • John Harrity – District 1 (Term expires 1/14/24)
  • Jose Perez – District 2 (Term expires 1/14/25)
  • Moses Dixon – District 3 (Term expires 1/14/23)
  • Meg Mulhern – District 5 (Term expires 1/14/24)
  • Charran Fisher – District 5 (Term expires 1/14/26)
  • Thomas Malone – District 5 (Labor rep – Term expires 1/14/27)

2020 Census Redistricting Results in New Voting Wards, Precincts

Worcester’s Board of Election Commissioners will begin the process of assigning new voting wards and precincts for Worcester residents based on the approved redistricting plan for the city.

The new redistricting will result in 60 precincts for municipal elections, an increase from the current 50 precincts, and 62 precincts for state elections.

The City of Worcester added 25,473 residents in the 2020 census, a 14.1% growth. Worcester now has a population of 206,518.

State elections will include two splits precincts: Wards 7-5 (A and B) and 4-2 (A and B). Voters in 7-5A will vote in the Sixth State Senate District and voters in 7-5B will vote in the Eighth State Senate District. Voters in 4-2A will vote in the Ninth State Senate District and voters in 4-2B will vote in the Eighth State Senate District.

Councilor George Russell Asks for More Parking at Roosevelt School

District 3 city councilor George Russell is asking the city to consider constructing of additional parking lots at Roosevelt School on Grafton Street.

According to Councilor Russell, the school pick-up line now extends from Roosevelt School past South Plaza (about 1/4 mile).

School gets out at 2:20 PM at Roosevelt. According to state records, there were 626 students enrolled at Roosevelt during the 2020-2021 school year.
