WORCESTER – A new study found that Worcester ranks as the 15th best city in the United States for STEMÂ (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) professionals.
The study considered 21 metrics organized into three categories to compare the 100 largest metro areas.
Worcester, which ranked 15th, just behind Raleigh, NC (14th) and just ahead of Tampa, FL (16th). The only other city ranked was Boston, which ranked 4th.
Within the individual categories, Worcester ranked 50th for professional opportunities, 6th for STEM friendliness, and 47th for quality of life.
The STEM friendliness ranking is driven by presence of engineering schools, disparity of men and women in STEM occupations and STEM degrees, mathematics performance, and more.
The seven best cities, starting with the best ranked, are Austin, TX (1st), Seattle, WA (2nd), Atlanta, GA (3rd), Boston, MA (4tg), Sacramento, CA (5th), San Jose, CA (6th), and San Francisco, CA (7th).
