In today’s daily 5 Things You Need to Know feature, ThisWeekinWorcester.com explores five important items and stories that Worcester and Central Massachusetts residents should keep a close eye on.

In today’s edition – Monday, October 17 – the City of Worcester is hosting groundbreaking event today at Indian Hill Park, Kennedy Community Health is distributing free food on Friday at Great Brook Valley, Peppercorns is now taking orders on Thanksgiving meal packages, the Massachusetts Pirates 2023 schedule is released and there’s a free panel and networking event at the Unum building in downtown Worcester next week.

City of Worcester Hosting Groundbreaking Event at Indian Hill Park Today

The City of Worcester will hold a groundbreaking ceremony at Indian Hill Park today – Monday, Oct. 17 – at 4:15 PM.

City leaders will discuss the final phase of redevelopment happening at the park. The playground and softball field will be renovated, including new drainage, sports lighting, irrigation, fencing, accessible walkways, a batting cage, bull pens, backstop, seating, and a practice softball field.

Much of the old fields have already been cleared away to make way for the redevelopment.

The work is expected to be completed by Spring 2024. It follows a previous phase of renovation at Indian Hill Park that included improvements to the parking lot, storm water management, and basketball court.

Kennedy Community Health Distributing Free Food Friday at Great Brook Valley

On Friday, Oct. 21 at 3 PM, the Edward M. Kennedy Community Health Center will be distributing pre-sorted bags of food to Worcester Housing Authority residents living at Great Brook Valley.

The bags of food are courtesy the Regional Environmental Council. Distribution of the bags is in partnership with Project Bread.

The bags will distributed at 32 Great Brook Valley Ave.

Peppercorns Taking Orders on Thanksgiving Meal Packages

Peppercorns is helping families make things easier this year with homemade Thanksgiving dinner packages.

The packages are available for two ($39) or four people ($78) and include the following:

  • Sliced Roasted Turkey
  • Stuffing
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Cranberry Sauce
  • Butternut Squash
  • Corn
  • Dinner Rolls

Sangria for four people can be added for an additional $30. 

The deadline to order is Nov. 22 at 12 PM. Packages can be ordered by calling Peppercorns at 508-752-7711.

Packages are served cold with reheating instructions.

Massachusetts Pirates 2023 Schedule Released

The Massachusetts Pirates will start their 2023 season with back-to-back home games at the DCU Center in downtown Worcester on March 26 against the Green Bay Blizzard and April 2 against the Bay Area Panthers.

The 15-game schedule starts in late March through mid-July.

The Pirates will end their season with three straight road games against Arizona, Northern Arizona and Sioux Falls.

Free Panel and Business Networking Event Next Week at Unum Building

The Center for Women & Enterprise (CWE) of Central Massachusetts, The Venture Forum and the Business Development Lab at the WPI School of Business are partnering to host an in-person event to help the small business and startup community learn about the funding options that are available.

Five panelists from across the funding spectrum will answer questions about what funding options are available to the entrepreneurial community, what you need to apply, what they expect in return and which funding source may be the best fit for you and your business. 

Panelists include: Gordon Armstrong – CEO, President and Founder of Strong Capital Markets; Susan Johnson – Senior Vice President Senior Commercial Lender/Team Leader Middlesex Savings Bank; Tamas Javor – Senior Associate, MassMutual Impact Venture Capital; John Williams – Angel Investor, River Valley Investors; and Priya Yadav – Vice President, Investments MassVentures.

The event is Tuesday, Oct. 25 from 5 PM to 7:30 PM at the Unum Building located at 1 Mercantile St. in Worcester.

This event is free to attend.  Light apps will be available.
