WORCESTER – In our latest daily feature, ThisWeekinWorcester.com will explore five important items and stories that Worcester and Central Massachusetts residents should keep a close eye on.
These five things can cover a whole range of subjects and issues that we feel are pertinent to understanding what’s going on in the City and the cities and towns surrounding Worcester.
In today’s edition — May 8, 2019 — Paul DePalo drops out of Worcester City Council race, a petition has started to support superintendent Maureen Binienda, the Worcester Bravehearts release their promotional schedule, two local girls to play one character in musical at Hanover Theatre and street sweeping to continue on Vernon Hill and start in the Southbridge St. area.

DePalo Steps Out of City Council Race
On Tuesday, Attorney Paul DePalo opted out of the Worcester City Council At-Large race.
In a statement, DePalo said “As the summer approaches, I see that I will not have time to balance family life with running an effective campaign.”
“I’m grateful to my supporters, whose enthusiasm inspired me to run in the first place. It’s an exciting election cycle for Worcester and I look forward to participating as a supporter rather than as a candidate.”
Petition Started to Support Maureen Binienda
A Petition named “Support Maureen Binienda” has launched on GoPetition.com. Binienda is currently in negotiations for a second three-year term contract as superintendent of Worcester Public Schools.
The origin of the petition is not clear on the page, but sources have told TWIW this is one of two petitions circulating through the Worcester school system — the other petition being a hard copy.
As of Wednesday morning, the online petition had more than 400 signatures.
Over the past few months, Binienda has received criticism from some local groups in the City regarding the school system’s disciplinary rates of Hispanic students.
Binienda, for her part, has received full support from the teachers’ union and the association of Worcester principals.
