WORCESTER – Acting Fire Chief Martin Dyer announced on Tuesday that an additional two victims were discovered at the scene of a fire at a six-family three-decker at 2 Gage Street. Four individuals are now known to be dead as a result of the fire.
Dyer said that specific information on additional individuals in the building is not known, but search efforts are not complete, leaving the possibility of the discovery of additional victims.
Emergency personnel responded to the fire around 3:30 AM on Saturday. Significant structural damage and a roof collapse have hindered search efforts at the scene after the fire was extinguished. City officials announced late Saturday afternoon that two victims had been discovered.
Dyer also reported that search efforts were delayed by the discovery of several snakes inside the structure. Animal control experts responded to the scene to remove the animals. Dyer said the snakes discovered so far were alive.
Notifications of next of kin are not complete, so the names of the victims are being withheld at this time.
Worcester County District Attorney Joe Early Jr. said the investigation into the fire is ongoing.
