In today’s daily 5 Things You Need to Know feature, ThisWeekinWorcester.com explores five important items and stories that Worcester and Central Massachusetts residents should keep a close eye on.

In today’s edition — Thursday, Feb. 27 — Worcester Technical High School has been awarded grant issued by the Governor’s office, Flagg Street School Parent-Teacher Group is organizing parents night out at Wormtown Brewery, there’s a Worcester schools robotics tournament tonight, the City of Worcester is asking for your help in its Parks and Open Spaces survey and the Southborough Police Department is accepting applications for its citizen police academy.

 

Worcester Technical High School Awarded $750k Grant

Worcester Technical High School has been awarded a multi-year Skills Capital grant of $750,000. The grant will support the school’s Advanced Manufacturing and Metal Fabrication & Joining Technologies program. 

The grant will allow students to work on ideas from concept to end product in a newly developed Fabrication Center. 

The grant came from the $14.6 million Skills Capital Grants being issued by the Baker-Polito administration to educational institutions across the Commonwealth.

 

Flagg Street School Parent’s Night Out at Wormtown Brewery

The Flagg Street School Parent-Teacher Group is hosting a Parents Night Out at Wormtown Brewery on March 7 from 6-10 PM.

The cost is $25 per person and $5 from each ticket goes back to Flagg Street School to support enrichment programs.

Worcester Open Space and Recreation Survey Extended

The city’s Parks Department is asking for your input on the Worcester Open Space and Recreation Plan 2020. The online survey, which was to be available through February 28 has now been extended to March 31.

Worcester Public Schools Robotics Tournament Tonight 

Nelson Place School is hosting the Worcester Public School Office of Curriculum and Professional Learning’s robotics tournament tonight. The entire contest included 14 elementary schools with 66 teams and more than 200 students.

The second and final night of the tournament starts at 4 PM Thursday at 35 Nelson Place in Worcester. 

 

Applications to the Boro’s Citizens Police Academy are due March 7

The Southborough Police Department has twice before operated a citizens police academy. This year the academy will be run in partnership with Northborough and Westborough Police.

The program will begin on April 1 and run for eight consecutive Wednesday evenings from 6 PM to 9 PM. 

Participation will include tours of the station, equipment demonstrations, introduction to specialized officers and patrol procedures including a ride along with an officer. 

Classes in the past have covered topics such as Criminal Law, Patrol Procedures, Evidence Collection, Domestic Violence, Motor Vehicle Enforcement, Court Procedures, and Use of Force.
