Utility Work, Not Repaving, Being Done on Grafton St.; Project Start Date TBA

WORCESTER – Last Sunday, ThisWeekinWorcester.com reported that the repaving of nearly 1.5 miles of Grafton St. was set to begin this past week.

That information was incorrect. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused and we certainly should’ve have confirmed the information more than once prior to posting the story.

On Friday, Oct. 4, the City of Worcester had posted their construction activity schedule for the week of Oct. 7 with the resurfacing of Grafton St. to start this week. We published our story on Grafton St. on Sunday, Oct. 6.

On Tuesday morning – Oct. 8 – the City removed the Grafton St. construction from their schedule. When TWIW asked the City why it was removed, we were instructed to ask the state. The City didn’t provide a reason as to why the project was removed.

According to MassDOT, the City’s utility work — not resurfacing — is underway on Grafton St.

The advertising for the resurfacing project went out in mid-July and the bid process started on Tuesday, Oct. 8. A start date for the work will be announced once the contract is awarded and the project is approved to proceed.

MassDOT confirmed the following aspects of the project:

  • The proposed improvements include pavement rehabilitation along Grafton Street (Route 122) from Franklin Street to Massasoit Road.  The existing pavement will largely be micro-milled and overlaid with hot mix asphalt, with certain areas of full depth reconstruction.
  • The existing rotary at Hamilton Street will be reconstructed as a roundabout and existing traffic signals along the corridor will be reconstructed.
  • Related work includes making minor drainage improvements, resetting or replacing granite curb, reconstructing cement concrete sidewalks with decorative stamped concrete accent strips, installing ADA compliant wheel chair ramps, traffic signs and pavement markings.  Additional streetscape improvements include decorative street lighting, stone retaining walls and landscaping.pavement markings.

ThisWeekinWorcester.com will continue to follow this project and provide updates as they become available. Again, we apologize for any confusion and will update this story if the City provides any additional information.
