MassDOT Adjusts Protocols to Shorten Lines at RMVs

Beginning Thursday, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation [MassDOT] will open an eighth Registry of Motor Vehicles [RMV] customer service location in Springfield to help handle customer volume across the state.

As ThisWeekinWorcester.com reported on Wednesday, the Worcester RMV location had a line wrapped around its building on Main St. and the RMV had a “ten at a time” policy in place to assist customers.

The RMV will now be issued tickets on a first-come, first-served basis with priority given to customers with transactions that can’t be done online.

Tickets will be issued to customers designating whether they will be served between 9 AM to 12 PM or later in the day between 12 PM to 5 PM.

Any remaining customers will be asked to leave and return another day.

“While we will have eight Registry of Motor Vehicles Service Centers open to address the needs of residents and business customers, we ask the public to respect the new protocols – that only those customers visit who do not have a credential extension, who have an immediate deadline, or who cannot conduct their business online, by phone, or by mail,” said Transportation Secretary and CEO Stephanie Pollack.  “Customers who do visit one of the eight centers will need to take a ticket and understand that new protocols are intended to keep them and other members of the public safe and healthy.”

Along with Worcester and Springfield locations, the RMV also opened customer service center locations in Pittsfield, Fall River, Lawrence, Boston, Brockton and Plymouth.

These facilities were prioritized based on regional availability, accessibility and facility size and capacity.

To assist with “social-distancing” and reducing facility volume, customers are asked to not bring multiple individuals with them. Meanwhile, AAA locations will continue to offer select RMV services to AAA members and road tests will be suspended indefinitely.
