WORCESTER – On Thursday , August 12, the Worcester School Committee passed the plan proposed by the Worcester Public Schools administration of Superintendent Maureen Binienda to start returning students to in-person classes after Quarter 1 of the upcoming school year.

The School Committee passed the plan unanimously.

Mayor Joe Petty began Thursday’s meeting announcing that further review of information about ventilation systems forced several classrooms and common areas in several schools off-line.

Petty said that ventilation systems upgrades should be conducted this Fall in all schools in the district.

When those upgrades are complete, the district will begin to transition students in Group C, students who require specialized instruction, to in-person learning.

That transition will begin after Quarter 1 of the school year.

During Quarter 1, WPS staff will be allowed to decide if they want to teach remote learning in their classrooms or teach from their homes.

Petty also noted that the COVID-19 index in Worcester was changed earlier this week from green to yellow, indicating increased risk due to an increase of COVID-19 cases in Worcester.
