Worcester Celebrates Black Musicians at Worcester Common

WORCESTER – A collection of Worcester’s African American musicians performed at the Worcester Common on Saturday for second annual Black Music Festival, on Saturday. despite rain across the Downtown area throughout the day..

The event featured dozens of performances including local music legend Lil Rennie who returned to Worcester for her first live performance since playing at the famous Apollo Theatre in Harlem. Others included Ladii Girl, DJ KID KASH, Nashville native vocalist Christon Carney and local rapper Big Nate All Star.

The city closed parts of Front Street for much fo the day to accomodate vendors attnding the event. were also closed off for most of the day to accommodate

The event was organized by the Uncommonwealth Group, a local black mentorship organization, and hosted by local entrepreneur Charles Luster.

The group says the date of the event holds significance in black culture. June has been Black Music Month since 1979 when it was designated by President Jimmy Carter.

The event included the Black Excellence Awards ceremony where several received recognition for their work in local communities.

Many of the black owned businesses had tables at the festival such as Bri’s Sweet Treats, TeaJani, Woo Juice, Aretha’s Kitchen and many others.

The event after party was held at Beths’ on Grafton Hill.
