Worcester Declares State of Emergency

WORCESTER – The City of Worcester has declared a state of emergency after a second person has tested positive for coronavirus. This declaration allows the City to act swiftly and increase powers as circumstances warrant.

Two individuals have now tested positive. One has tested negative.

There are four people awaiting test results, including all three of the people associated with two Worcester Public Schools, North High School and Chandler Magnet Elementary School. All four are in isolation and monitored by the Worcester Department of Public Health (WDPH).

Dr. Michael Hirsh, the Director of WDPH, said he expects that we will continue to see new cases in and around the city.

Hirsh said that “You can’t take the public out of public health” and urged that citizens must be part of the solution. By maintaining proper hygiene, especially hand washing, and maintaining physical distancing from others is the best way to support the public in this time of contagion.

Hirsh also said first responders in the city are now equipped with proper protective equipment to properly safeguard against the virus. When calling emergency services, situations that include illness will be questioned about the situation. When appropriate, a special hazmat team will be deployed.

Changes to City Policies

City Manager Ed Augustus also announced several changes to city policies.

City Council and School Committee meetings will be closed to the public, but virtual access will be available. Other meetings will meet virtually with the public also being able to take part. All advisory meetings will be discontinued until further notice.

The maximum number of people permitted at city meetings and events is now 25. The previous limit was 50, set just a week ago.

City playgrounds will also now be closed until further notice. All city parks will remain open.

Non-city employees, like volunteers and interns, have been told to stay home. City Hall will remain open.
