WORCESTER – The City of Worcester has released compensation data for 7,962 public employees for calendar year 2022. The top 47 wage earners on the city payroll in 2022 were Worcester Police Department employees who each earned at least $210,163 in gross pay in 2022. The city’s top wage earner, a police department captain, earned $286,932 in gross wages.
A total of 67 city employees earned more than $200,000 in 2022. Just four of those, which include former City Manager Ed Augustus and current City Manager Eric Batista, were outside the police department.
According to the latest available census data, median household income in 2021 dollars in Worcester was $56,746. Per capita income in 2021 dollars was $30,855.
A small selection of 30 city employees, representing just 0.38% of the city’s total workforce, earned more than double their regular base salary in 2022 in detail and overtime pay.
One Worcester Public Schools custodian, whose regular pay was $12,098, earned over $19,000 in additional overtime. Two dispatchers earned more in overtime pay than their regular pay, as well.
Of the remaining 27 individuals that earned more in overtime and detail pay than their regular pay, one is a police sergeant. The other 26 are police officers. One of those officers, Colby Turner, who faces criminal charges in connection with allegedly falsifying records related to working hours, increased their income at the highest percentage.
