5 Things You Need to Know Today in Worcester – Oct. 14, 2020

In today’s daily 5 Things You Need to Know feature, ThisWeekinWorcester.com explores five important items and stories that Worcester and Central Massachusetts residents should keep a close eye on.

These five things can cover a whole range of subjects and issues that we feel are pertinent to understanding what’s going on in the city and the cities and towns surrounding Worcester.

In today’s edition – Wednesday, October 14 – there’s construction on Main St. today,  North High is hosting a drive-thru flu clinic for senior citizens on Thursday, WPI dropped its undergraduate application fee, gas prices are up a penny and get a free pizza from UNO by voting on pizza.

Main St. Construction

From 6 AM until 3 PM on Wednesday, October 14, milling will be taking place on Main St. from Martin Luther King Jr Blvd to Franklin St.

The intersection at Front St and Pleasant St. is not expected to be closed until or after lunch.

While the intersection is closed, the crew will work on Main St in front of City Hall.

The intersection at Main St. and Franklin St. will not be closed on Wednesday.

 

Drive-Thru Flu Clinic For Seniors at North High School

Walgreens, with assistance provided by the Worcester Senior Center and the Worcester Department of Public Health and Human Services, will offer seasonal flu immunization at a Drive-By Flu Clinic for seniors on Thursday, Oct. 15, 10 AM until 1 PM, at North High School, 140 Harrington Way in Worcester.

Appointments can be made by calling the Worcester Senior Center at (508) 799-1232.

Seniors should have their Medicare card number and/or other health insurance to make an appointment, and should bring the card to the clinic.

 

WPI Drops Undergraduate Application Fee

Students who apply to Worcester Polytechnic Institute [WPI] as an undergraduate student will no longer have to include $70 with their application.

WPI announced the change on Monday, October 12, and it’s effective immediately.

The policy change is part of WPI mission to expand access to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math [STEM] education.

 

Gas Prices this Week

AAA Northeast, the popular not-for-profit auto club, reports changes in gas prices across the region on a weekly basis.

Massachusetts’s average gas price increased one cent from last week ($2.10), averaging $2.11 per gallon. That price is the 3 cents lower than a month ago ($2.14), and 46 cents cheaper than September 28, 2019 ($2.57).

Massachusetts’s average gas price is 8 cents lower than the national average.

AAA Northeast’s October 5 survey of fuel prices found the current national average to be the same as last week, averaging $2.18 a gallon. Today’s national average price is 4 cents lower than a month ago ($2.22), and 47 cents cheaper than this day last year ($2.65).
