In today’s daily 5 Things You Need to Know feature, ThisWeekinWorcester.com explores five important items and stories that Worcester and Central Massachusetts residents should keep a close eye on.

These five things can cover a whole range of subjects and issues that we feel are pertinent to understanding what’s going on in the city and the cities and towns surrounding Worcester.

In today’s edition – Wednesday, December 9 – free flu shots are available at three Worcester locations this Friday, nominations for Woman of Consequence awards is open now, the Worcester Housing Authority wins a grant for Camp Lakeside, Candle Safety Day is December 14, and win with Dunkin’ on TikTok.

Three Free Flu Clinics on Friday in Worcester

Worcester Public Schools partner with Family Health Center and Kennedy Community Health on Friday, December 11, for a free flu clinic at three locations in Worcester.

Students of Worcester Public Schools receive flu vaccines at no cost for. Proof of insurance is requested.

A parent or guardian must accompany all individuals under 18 years old.

Clinics will be at Worcester Tech High School, Worcester East Middle and Woodland/Claremont from 10 AM to 2 PM.

It is recommended to download and fill out the consent form prior to arriving at the clinic.

 

Nominations for Woman of Consequence Open Now

Nominations are now being accepted for the 22nd annual Woman of Consequence and the 18th annual Young Woman of Consequence awards.

The deadline for nominations is Thursday, January 21.

City of Worcester Advisory Committee on the Status of Women will present the awards during a virtual ceremony on Thursday, March 11.

Nominees for the Woman of Consequence Award must meet the following criteria:

  • Exceptional leadership
  • Demonstrated dedication and compassion resulting in positive change
  • Outstanding role models of community engagement
  • Live, work or volunteer in the City of Worcester
  • Must be available to videotape an acceptance speech in advance of the award ceremony

Nominees for the Young Woman of Consequence Award must show leadership and tangible results as an agent of change in the City of Worcester and meet the following criteria:

  • Currently a junior or senior in high school
  • Resides in Worcester
  • Demonstrates dedication and leadership abilities
  • Must agree to video record an acceptance speech for the award ceremony

The 2021 Woman of Consequence nomination form and the 2021 Young Woman of Consequence Award self-nomination form are available now.

 

WHA Awarded $15,000 Grant for Camp Lakeside

The Greater Worcester Community Foundation awarded a Community Benefits Grant of $15,000 to Building Futures, Inc., the non-profit of the Worcester Housing Authority [WHA].

The grant is to support the operation of Camp Lakeside, a free summer camp program offered to youth at the WHA’s Lakeside Apartments.

Camp Lakeside focuses on nutrition, fitness, and literacy, and runs from early July through mid-August.

The program serves approximately 35 youth between the ages of 5 and 13, providing them with activities such as cooking lessons, arts and crafts, sports and group physical fitness activities, book clubs.

Camp Lakeside also offers three educational field trips that promote a healthy lifestyle and reduce summer learning loss.

 

Candle Safety Day is Monday, December 14

State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey announced that Monday, December 14, 2020 is Candle Safety Day.

Ostroskey reminds residents that Christmas is the top day for candle fires of the year and advises people to use candles safely during this holiday season and throughout the year.

Ostroskey advises the following steps to keep your family safe this holiday season:

  • Burn candles only inside a one-foot circle of safety, free of anything that can burn
  • Never leave candles burning when you are not watching them or when you’re falling asleep
  • Always extinguish candles after use
  • When you go out, blow it out
  • Use a non-combustible saucer or candleholder
  • Keep candles out of reach of children and pets
  • Consider switching to battery-operated flameless candles

 

Get Featured on Dunkin’ Restaurant Menus Nationwide

Dunkin invites its TikTok fans to share their most creative and delicious Dunkin’ food hacks for a chance to be featured on Dunkin’ restaurant menus nationwide this December.

The contest, open through December 12, will be judged by our rock-star culinary team who will help choose the three most delicious hacks for their moment of fame later this month.

The three winners will each also receive a $100 Dunkin’ gift card and a Dunkin’ onesie.

Participate in the contest by showing or describing your best Dunkin’ menu hack in a TikTok video tagging @Dunkin and using #DunkinMenuHackContest.
