Last Updated: November 1, 2021

In today’s daily 5 Things You Need to Know feature, ThisWeekinWorcester.com explores five important items and stories that Worcester and Central Massachusetts residents should keep a close eye on.

These five things can cover a whole range of subjects and issues that we feel are pertinent to understanding what’s going on in the city and the cities and towns surrounding Worcester.

In today’s edition – Monday, November 1 – the Canal District Fall Stroll is this week with some special offers from local businesses, the annual Thanksgiving Fun Run at the Banner is back this year, the Ad Hoc search committee for the new Worcester Public Schools superintendent meets this week, a new Planet Fitness is opening up on Lincoln Street and the draw down of Lake Quinsigamond is today.

Canal District Fall Stroll Scheduled for Saturday

The Canal District Fall Stroll is back and scheduled for Saturday, November 6.

The stroll encourages people to visit the many shops and restaurants in the Canal District. Many of the businesses will be hosting events, offering special discounts and raffling off products and gift cards.

For example, BirchTree Bread Co. at Crompton Collective is raffling off free bread for a year, Birch Alley is raffling off a gift basket and a $100 gift certificate and Worcester Wares is raffling off a $50 gift card.

Buck’s Whiskey & Burger Bar is handing out free pizza slices raffling off a $25 gift card and the Queen’s Cups is offering chocolate chip cookies to its first 50 customers.

The Fall Stroll is scheduled from 11 AM to 10 PM.

Search Committee for New Superintendent Meets this Week

The Ad Hoc Search Committee for the next superintendent will meet virtually on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 7 PM.

The committee includes Mayor Joe Petty and school committee members Molly McCullough, Dianna Biancheria and Tracy O’Connell Novick.

The committee will start the process of conducting a national search for the next superintendent of Worcester Public Schools. The next superintendent will start July 1, 2022.

In early September, the school committee voted against offering current superintendent Maureen Binienda a one-year contract extension.

New Planet Fitness is Opening on Lincoln Street

Worcester’s second Planet Fitness will open soon at Lincoln Plaza.

According to the company’s website, the new location is listed at 535 Lincoln Street. No announcement for its opening date is listed as of Sunday, Oct. 31.

Draw Down of Lake Quinsigamond is Today

The Lake Quinsigamond Commission will begin to lower the water level, or draw down, Lake Quinsigamond and Flint Pond on Monday.

The Irish Dam in Grafton will be lowered two or three inches at a time until the water elevation in Lake Quinsigamond and Flint Pond reaches 24 to 30 inches below normal pool. The purpose of the draw down is to expose the roots of nuisance aquatic vegetation proliferating in Lake Quinsigamond and Flint Pond to freezing temperatures and thereby reducing some of the heavy weed growth along the shoreline and in the shallow areas of the lake and pond.
