These five things can cover a whole range of subjects and issues that we feel are pertinent to understanding what’s going on in the city and the cities and towns surrounding Worcester.

In today’s edition – Monday, October 24 – the city is unveiling a women’s suffrage marker in honor of Sarah E. Wall today, the first ever virtual New England Regional Job fair is next month, the Kindness Coalition of Massachusetts is raising money for Thanksgiving baskets for families in need, the Worcester Historical Museum announced a Denholms Department Store exhibit for next fall and check out Worcester-themed DIY Halloween costume ideas from the Worcester Arts Council.

City of Worcester to Unveil Women’s Suffrage Market on Sycamore Street

The City of Worcester will unveil a historic women’s suffrage marker honoring suffragist Sarah E. Wall at an event today – Monday, Oct. 24 – at the corner of Main Street and Sycamore Street at 4 PM.

The marker will celebrate abolitionist and women’s rights activist from Worcester, Sarah E. Wall, and her protest of property taxes in the early 1850s in the name of women’s voting rights, a protest spanned more than 20 years. The Sarah Wall marker unveiling takes place on the anniversary of another historic event that took place in Worcester – the First National Woman’s Rights Convention (October 23-24, 1850).

The marker will become part of the National Votes for Women Trail, along with four other Massachusetts suffrage markers. The other four Massachusetts markers are for: Maria Baldwin (Cambridge); Anne L. Page (Danvers); Remond Family (Salem); and Sojourner Truth (Northampton).

Speakers will include:

  • State Senator Harriette L. Chandler
  • State representative Mary S. Keefe
  • Worcester city councilor at-large Morris Bergman
  • District 2 city councilor Candy Mero-Carlson
  • Acting City Manager Eric Batista
  • Kristen Elechko, Regional Director, Office of Senator Edward J. Markey
  • Fredie Kay, Suffrage100MA Founder & President

The project is funded through a grant by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, sponsored by the National Collaborative for Women’s History Sites (NCWHS), and coordinated in Massachusetts by Suffrage100MA.
