Massachusetts Ranked the Most Energy Efficient State

A new report that compares auto and home energy efficiency of the lower 48 states found Massachusetts the most energy efficient state.

The average American household spends at least $2,000 per year on utilities and another $2,148 on motor fuel and oil. Residents in the north, with cold winter months, carry an even heavier burden.

The study found Massachusetts ranks first in vehicle-fuel efficiency and ninth in both home energy efficiency and transportation efficiency.

That efficiency is important, as another study found Massachusetts the fifth most energy expensive state.

Here are the overall rankings across  New England and the Northeast:

  • 2 – New York
  • 3 – Rhode Island
  • 5 – Vermont
  • 9 – Connecticut
  • 14 – New Hampshire
  • 15 – New Jersey
  • 16 – Maine
  • 21 – Pennsylvania

The only state outside New England that ranked in the top five is Utah, which ranked fourth.

The five least energy efficient states, ranking from 44 to 48, are:

  • 44 – Mississippi
  • 45 – Arkansas
  • 46 – West Virginia
  • 47 – Alabama
  • 48 – South Carolina

Hawaii and Alaska were not included in the study due to a lack of available data.
