FBI Releases Hate Crime Statistics Report for 2020

The Federal Bureau of Investigation [FBI] released the Uniform Crime Reporting Program’s report titled “Hate Crime Statistics, 2020,” on Monday, August 30. The report details statistics related to bias-motivated incidents throughout the nation in 2020.

Law enforcement agencies submitted reports involving 7,759 criminal incidents involving 10,532 criminal offenses as being motivated by bias toward race, ethnicity, ancestry, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender, and gender identity in 2020.

According to the FBI’s synopsis, the report found the distribution of offenses by bias of the offender as:

  • Race/ Ethnicity/ Ancestry: 61.9%
  • Sexual Orientation: 20.5%
  • Gender Identity: 2.5%
  • Disability: 1%
  • Gender: 0.7%

Of the 10,532 offenses, incident reports classified 7,426 (71%) as crimes against persons. Types of crimes against persons included:

  • Intimidation: 53.4%
  • Simple Assault: 27.6%
  • Aggravated Assault: 18.1%

The report cites 22 murders and 19 rapes reported as hate crimes.

Of 2,913 the criminal offenses classified as against property, 76.4% were acts of destruction/damage/vandalism. Robbery, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, arson, and other offenses accounted for the remaining 23.6% of crimes against property.

There were 6,431 known offenders reported. The race of known offenders are:

  • White: 55.2%
  • Black: 20.2%
  • Asian: 1.1%
  • American Indian/ Alaskan Native: 1.1%
  • Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander: 0.5%
  • Multiple Races: 5.6%
  • Unknown: 16.4%

Of the 5,820 known offenders which incident reports listed ethnicity:

  • Not Hispanic or Latino: 39.3%
  • Hispanic or Latino: 10.7%
  • Multiple Ethnicities: 2.5%
  • Unknown: 47.5%

According to the FBI, 15,136 law enforcement agencies submitted data compiled in the report.
