Polar Park Project Edging Towards Workforce Diversity Goals

On Friday, the Polar Park workforce diversity numbers were presented to the Worcester Redevelopment Authority.

The project is creeping towards its goal of hiring Worcester residents to make up 25% of its workforce. Through January, the project had reached 22%.

As has been the case during most of the development, the project has exceeded its goal of hiring female workers. To date, women make up 11% of the workforce, surpassing the goal of 6%.

And the project is just shy of its target of hiring people of color to make up 15.3% of its workforce. People of color currently make up 14.97% of its workforce.

Worcester Senior Center to Have Rain Garden Installed in Parking Lot

Worcester has received a state grant of $466,140  through the Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Program for nature-based solutions to the Worcester Senior Center parking lot.

The funding will help improve storm-water drainage in the parking lot to lessen the impact of flooding in the Green Island neighborhood. A rain garden will also be created to reduce flooding and will help mitigate sudden large flows of storm water from the parking lot into Vernon Street.

“As we undertake development and renovation projects throughout the city, we always have to be conscious of ways we can improve our infrastructure to strengthen our resiliency against the natural effects of climate change,” said City Manager Edward M. Augustus, Jr. “This funding allows us to provide a sustainable way to alleviate flooding while also enhancing the landscape of our Senior Center with colorful and thoughtful vegetation.”
