WORCESTER – A local man was arrested on Sunday for pointing a firearm at police and fleeing in a vehicle.

Two Worcester Police officers were on patrol near Aetna Street on Sunday. At around 12:45 AM, the officers were travelling behind a Ford Explorer. The driver accelerated on Blanche Street to what the officers estimated was 50 miles-per-hour.

According to the Worcester Police Department, the officers briefly lost sight of the vehicle, but soon caught up to the driver, James Cabrera, 21, of Worcester, on Fox Street.

When officers caught up to Cabrera, he was outside the vehicle and allegedly pointed what officers believed was a black hangun at them. After the officers activated their emergency lights, Cabrera fled the scene in his vehicle, according to police.

The officers again lost site of Cabrera, and called off the pursuit.

Cabrera was later located on Towbridge Circuit and arrested.

Cabrera faces charges of:

  • Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (firearm);
  • Failure to Stop for Police; and
  • Operating to Endanger.
