City Council Preview: Interim City Manager, District Changes, Fair Share

Here are three items that may be of interest on the City Council agenda Tuesday.

Addressing the Resignation of City Manager Ed Augustus

As ThisWeekinWorcester.com previously reported, City Manager Ed Augustus has announced he will resign at the end of May. As also previously reported, Council will take up a motion to appoint Eric Batista as interim City Manager.

Councilors will also vote on accepting Augustus’ letter of resignation.

In another item, Mayor Joe Petty ass asks for a a report from the City Clerk on the procedures and timelines followed during the 1993, 2004 and 2013-2014 City Manager searches and appointments.

Councilors Seek Information on New Districts

The Committee on Municipal and Legislative Operations seeks a range of information on the transition to redrawn city council districts in multiple orders before the council on Tuesday.

In the associated orders, city council:

  • Asks for a report from the City Clerk on strategies to educate the public on the new district council lines
  • Asks for a report from the City Clerk on how many eligible voter are in each current district compared to the number and the impact the redrawn districts would have.
  • Asks the City Clerk to consider including information for residents to find their state reps, members of the state delegation, and changes to School Committee districting in the “Find My City Councilor” app.

Supporting the Fair Share Amendment

Councilor at-large Khrystian King is asking the council to vote to express support for the Share Amendment proposal for Massachusetts.

The Fair Share Amendment would add an additional tax of four percentage points on annual income above $1 million and dedicate the funds raised by this tax to quality public education, affordable public colleges and universities, and for the repair and maintenance of roads, bridges, and public transportation.
