BOSTON – The Massachusetts Department of Public Health released a review of breakthrough COVID-19 cases in vaccinated Massachusetts residents on Monday, December 20. The review found nearly 97% of all breakthrough cases in the Commonwealth have not resulted in hospitalization or death.
The review also found that unvaccinated residents are five times more likely to become infected than fully vaccinated residents. Unvaccinated residents are 31 times more likely to become infected than fully vaccinated residents who received a booster.
Since the start of the pandemic, 1.01 million total confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been detected in Massachusetts. As of December 20, the 19,828 COVID-19 related deaths represent 1.96% of cases.
Since December 2020, breakthrough cases detected are 88,968. The report found 0.72% of those cases resulted in death. Of the 19,296 breakthrough cases within individuals from 12-years to 29 years of age, no deaths occurred. Of all breakthrough cases, 96.7% resulted in no hospitalizations or death.
