WORCESTER – A Worcester man pleaded guilty in federal court on Tuesday to charges of failing to file tax returns and tax evasion.
Leonard Ngunjiri a/k/a Leonard Gitonga, 50, pleaded guilty to five counts of failure to file a tax return and one count of tax evasion.
Sentencing is scheduled for June 4, 2020. Ngunjiri was charged by indictment in September 2019.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, from 2006 to 2008 and 2011, Ngunjiri attempted to evade paying taxes by concealing his assets and depositing paychecks into bank accounts held by other people.
The other people in turn paid Ngunjiri’s business and personal expenses out of their accounts.
Additionally, Ngunjiri did not file federal income tax returns from 2012 through 2017 despite making income in excess of the minimum filing requirements.
For the charge of tax evasion, Ngunjiri faces a sentence of up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $100,000.
The charge of failure to file tax returns provides for a sentence of up to one year in prison, one year of supervised release, and a fine of $25,000.
