WORCESTER – A head-on crash on I-290 left one man dead and another man hospitalized on Sunday night.

Massachusetts State Police responded to reports of a spinout crash of a single vehicle at shortly before 9 PM on Sunday on the eastbound side of I-290, near Burncoat Street exit, Exit 23. While in route to the scene, police received a report of a vehicle travelling the wrong way on I-290 eastbound approaching downtown Worcester.

Police arrived to discover a head-on crash involving a 2015 Honda Accord and a 2006 Toyota Highlander near the Belmont Street exit, Exit 21.

According to police, the investigation revealed the Accord was travelling eastbound and crashed into the concrete median barrier near the Burncoat Street exit. That collision left the Accord facing the wrong way on I-290. The driver then began travelling westbound on the eastbound side.

The Highlander was travelling eastbound in the same area, and the two vehicles collided head-on.

First responders extracted the driver of the Accord, a 31-year-old Marlborough man, and determined he was dead at the scene.

EMS transported the driver of the Highlander, a 24-year-old Worcester man, to UMass Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police did not release the identity of either man involved in the crash.

Massachusetts State Police detectives, as well as the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction and Crime Scene Services sections, continue to investigate the crash.
