BOSTON – Massachusetts Attorney General and Governor-elect Maura Healey announced today that Walmart has reached a nationwide agreement to pay more than $3 billion to resolve allegations that the company contributed to the opioid crisis through improper dispensing at its stores.
The agreement requires Walmart to pay $3 billion, including $2.4 billion for harm reduction, treatment and recovery services and implement new busines practices to prevent improper and illegal dispensing.
The agreement must gain the support of at least 43 states to go into effect. Healey said the required 43 states are expected to sign on by the end of 2022, allowing municipalities to join the resolution in the first quarter of 2023.
Healey said Massachusetts and its municipalities will receive over $61 million from the agreement.
Negotiations with Walgreens and CVS are also underway.
