In today’s edition – Thursday, March 5 – the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office hosts a self-defense workshop for women tonight in Millbury, take part in a Worcester Red Sox Fan Plan Meeting live on the radio this morning, a new campaign has been launched to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving, see where Worcester ranks in the list of America’s fattest cities and tickets are going on sale for the World’s Best-Selling Soprano at The Hanover Theatre.

 

Self Defense Workshop for Women in Millbury

On March 5 the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office and Vanessa T. Marcotte Foundation will be holding a self-defense workshop for women.

The workshop will be participatory and include realistic self-defense tactics, situational awareness and handling a confrontation both physically and mentally.

Pre-registration is required.

The workshop will be held at Care One at 312 Millbury Ave. in Millbury. Registration is at 5:45 PM and the program begins at 6 PM.

Worcester Red Sox Fan Plan Meeting Live on Talk of the Commonwealth

Hank Stolz, host of the long-time Worcester based radio program “Talk of the Commonwealth,” hosts the Worcester Red Sox show each Thursday during the final hour of his morning show from 9 to 10 AM.

On today’s show, Dr. Charles Steinberg will be live on air for a Fan Plan Meeting and will be taking questions.

These meetings, which are being held in and around Worcester, seek insight and feedback from the community about Polar Park, the future home of the Worcester Red Sox.

Eyes Up Phones Down Campaign Launches

In a campaign to raise awareness about the the dangers of distracted and distracted driving laws now in effect in Massachusetts, a new video has been produced as part of the “Eyes Up Phones Down” campaign.

Worcester Police, the Worcester County District Attorney’s office, the City of Worcester, Worcester Public Schools and Safe Roads Alliance are all taking part in the campaign.

The Worcester Police Crime Analysis Unit reports that there were 268 pedestrian accidents in Worcester in 2019 — 20 less than in 2018. Their analysis also indicated that Tuesday and Wednesday have the highest frequency of pedestrian crashes and the peak hours for pedestrian accidents are 2 PM to 9 PM.

Worcester Among Least Fattest Cities

According to the data from the experts at Wallethub, Worcester fairs pretty well in the rankings of America’s fattest cities, coming in as the 76th fattest city.

Wallethub compared 100 of the most populated U.S. metro areas across 19 indicators of weight-related problems. The data set ranges from share of physically inactive adults to projected obesity rates by 2030 to healthy-food access.

The World’s Best Selling Soprano Coming to Hanover Theatre

Sarah Brightman, the world’s most successful soprano, will bring her Hymn in Concert Tour to The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts on Tuesday, October 20.

Hanover Theatre members can get tickets tonight starting at 8 PM. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, March 6 at 10 AM.

Brightman has partnered with Swarovski on her world tour and her costumes and tiaras are composed of over 600,000 Swarovski crystals.
