DA Early’s Office Announces Mini-Grants for Safe Post-Prom and Post-Grad Parties

Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early’s Office has announced #TheENDD [Teens Helping to Educate about the Effects & Negligence of Drunk Driving] post-prom and post-graduation grants.

Worcester County high schools are invited to apply for mini-grants to support safe, organized after-prom or after-graduation activities for students. These events offer drug- and alcohol-free alternatives to high-risk activities. Grants will be given to schools to support existing events, or to assist schools in establishing a new event.

The grants are funded by the Massachusetts Office of Victim Assistance Drunk Driving Trust Fund. The application for funding requests can be found here and is due by Feb. 12.

UMass/ LEON Virtual Seminar on COVID-19 Vaccines

UMass Medical School and the Latino Empowerment Organizing Network [LEON] is holding a webinar on January 28, at 6:30 PM about vaccines against COVID-19.

Physicians and scientists from the Worcester Community will discuss

  • The importance of vaccines and their safety
  • The vaccination plan for the City of Worcester
  • Answers to questions from the community

Registration is required to attend this virtual session.

 

Anna Maria Awarded $20,000 Grant from Reliant Foundation for Addiction Center

Anna Maria College announced on Thursday, January 14, a grant awarded from the Reliant Foundation for $20,000 for its Addiction and Recovery Resource Center [AARC].

The funds will be used to continue to support the College’s SOBER Project which focuses on Substance use, Outcomes, Barriers and Efforts to Recovery. This program first began in 2019.

The SOBER Project works to reduce problems stemming from additions to opiates and other substances as well as secondary problems such as homelessness, joblessness and family distress.

 

Secretary of the Commonwealth Suggests Polling Place Vaccination

Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin wrote to Governor Charlie Baker this week to suggest the creation of a pilot program for COVID-19 vaccination centers adjacent to polling places in upcoming local elections.

In his letter to Governor Baker, Galvin pointed out that there are a number of communities around the state holding elections in March and all towns in Massachusetts throughout the spring.

 

ArtsWorcester Presents the 17th Annual College Show

The 17th Annual College Show, presented by ArtsWorcester, launches on Thursday, January 28.

The College Show is an online-only exhibition featuring a selection of work created by students throughout the greater Worcester area.

This year’s juror is Aprile Gallant, Associate Director of Curatorial Affairs and Senior Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs at the Smith College Museum of Art.

Gallant selected 51 works from over one hundred and eighty submissions in traditional and new media, including film, printmaking, photography, paint, and digital art.

Awards, which come with cash prizes, will be announced when the exhibition goes on view.
