LEOMINSTER – A single-car crash in Leominster led to the death of a 16-year-old Ayer girl and serious injuries to three other teens on Thursday.

Massachusetts State Police responded to the crash shortly after 7 PM and found a 2001 Ford Mustang had gone off the highway and into the wood line, after travelling down an embankment.

Police say the investigation shows the 16-year-old girl who died was a passenger in the vehicle. Other victims include the drive, an 18-year-old male from Shirley, a 16-year-old girl from Shirley, and an 18-year-old male from Bolton.

First responders transported the driver to Leominster Hospital and the two surviving passengers to UMass Memorial Hospital. All three had serious injuries. Leominster firefighters extracted all three from the vehicle.

Police say the preliminary investigation indicates the Mustang was travelling north on Rt. 190 in the right lane. As the vehicle approach other vehicles, the driver moved into the left lane and lost control, spinning off the right side of the road.

The crash remains under investigation. Excessive speed is being examined as a possible factor.

The scene was cleared around 9:30 PM.

The investigation is being conducted by the State Police-Leominster Barracks, the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the State Police Detective Unit for Worcester County.
