In today’s daily 5 Things You Need to Know feature, ThisWeekinWorcester.com explores five important items and stories that Worcester and Central Massachusetts residents should keep a close eye on.

These five things can cover a whole range of subjects and issues that we feel are pertinent to understanding what’s going on in the city and the cities and towns surrounding Worcester.

In today’s edition – Tuesday, March 10 – the DPW is reminding residents to not put plastic bags in recycling, there’s a Green Worcester Open House today, gas prices have dropped seven cents, Democrats in Massachusetts set a state record, and Green Hill golf course is now letting carts out.

DPW: Don’t Put Plastic Bags in with Recycling

The Worcester DPW is once again reminding residents that plastic bags of any kind are not accepted in the city’s curb-side recycling program.

An alternative to recycling plastic bags are to bring them back to a supermarket or grocery store that has a plastic bag recycling bin. Otherwise, you can throw them away with your trash.

Green Worcester Open House Today

The City of Worcester will host a Green Worcester Open House today – Tuesday, March 10 –  from 4 PM to 7 PM at the Worcester Senior Center.

This event is free and open to the public and will provide residents with an opportunity to learn about the proposed goals and provide comments in reference to the forthcoming Sustainability and Resilience Strategic Plan scheduled to be released in April.

Attendees are invited to drop-in at their convenience for 20 minutes or an hour to provide their thoughts. Feedback will be used to develop ways that Worcester can become a more sustainable, resilient, and green city.

Residents can also provide feedback online through a new survey which will be available March 10-31 on the Green Worcester webpage.

State Democrats Set Primary Record

Democrat voters have set a new record for the total number of ballots cast in a Democratic Presidential Primary, according to the Secretary of the Commonwealth William F. Galvin’s office.

A total of 1,417,498 voters cast ballots in the Democratic Primary last week. The previous record was set in 2008, when a total of 1,352,157 ballots were cast in the Democratic Primary.

In the other three party primaries, turnout was lower: 276,811 ballots cast in the Republican Primary, 4,158 ballots cast in the Libertarian Primary, and 1,620 ballots cast in the Green-Rainbow Primary.

The number of total ballots cast in all 4 party primaries was 1,700,087, which represents 37.11% percent of the number of eligible voters.

Green Hill Golf Course Letting Carts Out

With the warmer weather apparently here — at least for a little while — Green Hill Municipal Golf Course began letting golf carts out on Sunday.

The course opened for walking only back on Feb. 21 and now golfers have the option of renting a cart.

Gas Prices Down 7 Cents in MA

AAA Northeast is reporting that gas prices have dropped seven cents this week in Massachusetts.

Self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline is averaging at $2.36 per gallon this week — two cents below the national average.
