After Nearly 3 Years, Worcester’s Great Wall Finally Close to Reopening

WORCESTER – Owners of the Great Wall restaurant on Main St. in Worcester will go before the City’s License Commission on Thursday to request a common victualer license to open their business for the first time in nearly three years.

According to an update from the Worcester Redevelopment Authority [WRA], Great Wall’s owners received a temporary certificate of occupancy in January to open up the restaurant.

First, however, they had to apply for the common victualer license. They tried earlier this month, but the owners failed to have the health department come and inspect the restaurant area before the Feb. 6 hearing, so the application got continued to this week.

According to the WRA, Great Wall has since had the health inspection done and expect to get their license this week to open the restaurant.

In April 2017, the restaurant located at 521 Main St. was closed down as the owners were ordered to repair the rear wall of the building’s upper floors after they began crumbling down into Allen Court.

The WRA said the owner, Mindy Jiang Realty Trust, hasn’t made any advancements on their plans for the upper floors. The City’s code department wanted to see the stairs from the upper floors rebuilt. The temporary certificate of occupancy has allowed the owners to work on the stairs over the next three months.

According to the Telegram and Gazette, when the owners appeared before the License Commission earlier this month, they said the restaurant area “…has been totally rebuilt.”

There’s no known official open date at this time. We will update this story after Thursday’s License Commission meeting.
