With COVID-19 cases on the rise in many locations across the country, rates of re-opening vary across states.
During the week of October 12, a total of 12.6 million Americans were unemployed, largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A recent study by WalletHub.com rated the most and least recovered states in unemployment for the week of starting October 12. Forty-eight states and Washington D.C. recovered more quickly than Massachusetts during the week. Only Kansas recovered more slowly during the week.
When compared to the same week in 2019, which saw 4,139 claims in Massachusetts, there was a 975% increase during the week in 2020, to 44,158 claims.
While the analysis is dim for Massachusetts residents during the most recent week, the state ranks near the middle when compared to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Massachusetts ranks 23rd, just behind New York at 22nd and just ahead of Ohio at 24th, in employment recovery.
In the most recent week, Michigan recovered the most quickly, followed by Oregon and Vermont.
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Oregon has recovered most quickly, followed by Connecticut and New Jersey.
The slowest recovering state since the start of the pandemic is Georgia, preceded by Florida and New Hampshire.
