WORCESTER — The Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) unanimously voted on Wednesday to accept Burncoat High School as eligible for a future construction project. This decision is the first step towards potentially funding a new building and campus for the school. Burncoat High School has been proposed for MSBA funding 13 times since 2008.

The vote took place a day after Burncoat High School was closed due to a failure in the heating system. The school reopened on Wednesday.

The eligibility phase, which begins on July 1, will span approximately nine months. During this period, WPS will provide the MSBA with maintenance records, enrollment reports, and other relevant data to assist in determining the project’s scale.

Following the eligibility phase, WPS will undertake a feasibility study for the new high school’s design. The design and construction process is expected to take 5-7 years.

Dr. Rachel Monárrez, Superintendent of WPS, highlighted the importance of a premier facility for the school’s performing arts, dual immersion, and future-ready programs. Principal Joseph Ewick of Burncoat High School also acknowledged the efforts of all parties involved in advancing the project and stressed the need for a high-quality facility for the students.

The City of Worcester’s Public Facilities Department, in collaboration with WPS, will oversee the project, reflecting a concerted effort to enhance educational infrastructure in the city.

“Our scholars deserve a premiere educational facility that supports our exceptional performing arts, dual immersion and future-ready programming, and reflects the high value we place in them,” said Dr. Rachel Monárrez, Superintendent of WPS. “We look forward to working with the MSBA, Burncoat High and the broader Worcester community on this major endeavor to expand opportunities for youth at Burncoat High School.”

Burncoat High School Principal Joseph Ewick said, “A new Burncoat High School is greatly needed to ensure a high-quality experience for our students who deserve a top-notch facility.
